Going green is something that has really become front and center in everyone’s mind. With landfills at their maximum capacity and people really starting to see the effects of excessive waste, now, more than ever, it is important for people to cut back on their waste and start looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
Recycling can touch every part of your life, including the garden. In fact, if you think about it, it is really kind of fitting to feature recycled elements within your garden.
From repurposed planters to clever decorative elements, all you need is a little creativity and you can transform some pretty common items that you’re no longer using into elements for your garden.
Rain Boot Planters
If you have kids, you know how fast they grow. Instead of getting rid of their rain boots once they’ve outgrown them, turn them into cute planters. Just drill some holes into the bottom of the boots, fill them with potting soil and plant your favorite annuals, or even veggies. Place the planters along a walkway, on outdoor steps, or screw them onto a fence. You won’t believe how adorable they will look.

Fork Markers
When you plant a fruit or veggie garden, you probably like to use markers in order to keep track of the items that you’ve planted. Instead of buying those plastic stake markers, turn old forks into markers. Just write out the names of the items that you’ve planted on paper and laminate. Insert the papers into the tines of the forks and place the ends of the forks in front of the plants. Talk about a cute and simple way to keep track of your plants.
Tin Can Bird Feeders
Use your empty tin cans to feed the birds. All you have to do is rinse them out and remove the labels. Once the labels are removed, paint the cans with rust-proof paint. Paint them solid colors, or add some fun designs. Lay the cans on their sides and tie a wide ribbon around the center of the cans, making sure that there is enough extra ribbon to tie the feeder around a tree branch. Once you hang the can on a tree branch, fill it with bird seed and watch as your garden becomes a haven for hungry birds.

Milk Jug Luminaries
Light up your garden with milk jug luminaries. Wash out your plastic milk jugs and remove any labels on them. Cut a hole in the bottom. You can paint the jugs or draw designs on them, if you wish. Feed strings of Christmas lights through the bottoms of the jugs and set them out in your garden. When the sun goes down, they’ll add some interesting light to your outdoor area.
With some creativity, you can transform so many different everyday items into accessories for your garden. The end result is garden accessories that will make your outdoor space pop, and, of course, a little bit less in your area landfill. Talk about a great way to help out and beautify nature at the same time.
