My Top 2 Tips for Going Green

If you haven’t lived with any inclination of a green life – and I’ve been there – how in the world do you begin making greener choices?

Since I made a major turn-around in my own life, I know it’s possible. It’s not even very difficult. And it can be fun. If you’re just getting started, here are my Top 2 tips:

1. Know why you’re going green.

Please don’t go green just because it’s a fad and you feel a bunch of peer pressure. While you might begin to make some beneficial changes with this approach, you’ll most likely give up.

Decide why it’s important for you to make greener choices.
Are you truly concerned about the environment? Do you want a safer place for your children to live? After a serious illness, are you looking for healthier ways to live? Are you – like me – infuriated by unhealthy products that are readily available to consumers? Would you like to save a little money or live more resourcefully? All are great reasons to go green.

Similarly, once you know why you’re going green, know why you’re making each specific green change.
It may not be enough to just think that a change is green. Identify why you need to make the change. Then, when you’re swamped and wondering why you ever started implementing a particular change, you’ll remember your purpose and reason.

2. Make small changes when going green.

Start small. Pick one or two small changes you’d most like to make, then work at incorporating them into your life.

Once these changes have become habits and a normal part of your everyday life, make another small change. At the beginning it may not seem like a lot, but if you make one or two changes each month, by the end of a year you’ll notice that you’ve made 12 to 24 healthier, greener changes. Within a couple years (believe me, the time flies!) you’ve radically changed your life – yet the process will feel completely natural.

If you’ve been making green choices for a while, what are your Top 2 tips for going green?

I’m excited to share more details about greening your home tonight at 8 p.m. EST during Coffee Table Conversations.
