DIY Peppermint Shower Steamers (No Citric Acid)
3 min read
The scent of peppermint can both energize and open up your sinuses. Make these DIY peppermint shower steamers to add to your bathing routine for a spa-like experience with energizing aromatherapy.
Our homemade shower steamers use basic supplies, like Epsom salt and baking soda, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money on fancy ingredients. These shower melts use no citric acid.
Peppermint is so powerful that we also use it in our DIY Vapor Rub and Sinus Congestion Bath Salts.
DIY Peppermint Shower Steamers
Makes 12 shower steamer pucks.
Ingredients
- ½ cup Epsom salts
- ½ cup Baking soda
- 2 Tbsp. Water
- 25 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
- 1 Tbsp. Dried Peppermint Leaves
- Silicone mold (I used a basic round mold, but next time I’d use this daisy mold or these flower molds to make them look extra special, especially for gift giving)
Directions
Step 1
Add all of the supplies to a small bowl and stir together.
Step 2
Fill 12 of the mold cavities with the shower melt mixture. Press it down to be firm inside the mold.
Let side for about an hour. Then check the mixture and press down again so that the shower steamers are firm.
Allow to set for 24 hours. Keep out of sunlight and humidity while drying.
Step 3
Once completely hardened (timing will depend on humidity levels and temperature), carefully remove the shower melts from the mold.
Store these DIY shower steamers in a jar with a lid in a cool, dark place. Avoid putting them in direct sunlight, otherwise the steamers will lose their scent more quickly.
What Are Shower Steamers?
Wondering how to use these easy DIY shower steamers?
Just place one on the shower floor (preferably in a corner) away from the stream of water and in a place where you won’t step on it. Then let the water in your shower naturally dissolve the shower melt.
If you have a shelf inside your shower, you could place the shower melt on it and drip a few drops of water over the melt so that you don’t have to worry about stepping on the shower steamer.
As the ingredients melt away, the natural scent of peppermint will fill your shower, releasing its aromatherapy properties.
Since these shower steamers are used in the shower, not a bath, they do not need citric acid.
Citric acid is used for bubbling and fizzing (like in our lemongrass bath bombs and fizzy bath salts), and since you only want the essential oils to diffuse in your shower without creating a bubbly bath, there is no need for that ingredient.
How to Customize These Homemade Shower Melts
This is a basic shower melt recipe. The scents and dried herbs can be changed. Just keep the original quantities.
In fact, you don’t even NEED to have the dried herbs. They just add a fancy touch to your DIY shower steamers, which is especially nice if you are giving these as gifts.
Here are some variations:
- Leave out the dried leaves
- Use Eucalyptus essential oil for sinus congestion
- Add dried rose petals and rose essential oil (use the same supplies that we used for our Chocolate Rose Bath Salts)
- Chamomile flowers and chamomile essential oil would be a very delicate, calming scent
- Dried rosemary leaves and rosemary essential oil has an earthy scent with therapeutic benefits
