Save Our Coconuts: Coco Mama’s Commitment to the Philippine Coconut Industry
The Philippines plays a significant role in the global coconut industry as one of the largest producers and the second-largest exporter worldwide. Nevertheless, the industry is encountering substantial challenges. The Philippine Coconut Authority reports that a staggering 20% of the country’s coconut trees are senile. In response to this pressing issue, Coco Mama, the premier local gata brand in the Philippines, has initiated the “Save Our Coconuts” project as a proactive measure to address this problem.
Coco Mama’s “Save Our Coconuts” initiative is dedicated to providing 100,000 high-quality coconut seedlings over the course of five years to replace older trees, ensuring sustainable income for small-scale coconut farmers in the Philippines. The project is designed to play a crucial role in the ongoing revitalization of the Philippine coconut industry.
“Through Coco Mama’s ‘Save Our Coconuts’ project, we make our commitment to provide quality seedlings to smallholder farmer communities in the region. After all, our mission has always been to delight consumers whenever they prepare classic Filipino gata recipes, and part of this delight is in knowing that the brand they love is also doing its part in helping the coconut farmers,” said Coco Mama Marketing Director, Mr. Bryan Lingan.
On World Coconut Day in General Santos City, South Cotabato, the brand Coco Mama hosted a special tree planting event. The event was graced by the presence of the esteemed brand ambassador, Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo. Among the attendees were representatives from the Philippine Coconut Authority, City Environment and Natural Resources Office – General Santos City, Local Government Unit of General Santos City, Century Pacific Agricultural Ventures Inc., and a group of dedicated coconut farmers. The collaborative effort aimed to foster environmental stewardship and sustainability within the coconut industry.
Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo expressed her deep gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the campaign. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work of farmers in producing everyday essentials like “gata”. Through her involvement in the ‘Save Our Coconuts’ project, she aims not only to showcase the traditional and nutritious gata dishes to Filipino households but also to uplift the lives of the individuals responsible for harvesting the food that sustains our families.
