The Setting
In the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, on the fringes of the managed forest of Gwydyr, is the largely untouched Victorian gothic coaching stop of Betsw y Coed. Built at the intersection of the main roads transecting Wales east to west (A5) and north to south (A470) it was a perfect stop for the night and grew into a tourist destination all of its own. The mainly Victorian houses are all built on a strip of road along the rivers Conwy and Llugwy, in the shadow of the Snowdon Massif, Glyder and Carneddu mountains. The whole area feels like a mini Switzerland, all peaks and valleys with rivers running through it, complete with a dusting of snow on the summits.
